How to find your first customers as a UW Partner

By Scott McCaw, independent authorised UW Partner · Reviewed 8 October 2026

Most new Partners start with people they already know, through relaxed, permission-based conversations, and practise first appointments with their mentor. Friends and family are an option, not an obligation. Nobody can promise you leads or customers.

Do I need to sell?

There is a sales element: you help people decide whether to become UW customers. That does not mean a hard sell. We teach you to follow a structured process: understand what the household needs, review what they currently have, check the available UW options and explain clearly whether switching makes sense. If you do not know an answer, ask your mentor rather than guessing. Scott offers full-time help while you learn.

That's Scott's approach. Trying to pitch before you understand the services can undermine confidence and trust, so lean on your mentor for technical or unfamiliar questions. Switching won't suit or save money for every household, and nobody can promise savings. See the guide on choosing the right UW Partner to join with for what support to ask about.

Do I have to sell to friends and family?

No. Many people start there because those conversations feel natural, but only talk to people who are open to it, and accept a "no" gracefully. Pressure damages relationships and rarely works.

What if my network is small?

Think wider than close friends: neighbours, colleagues, clubs, school-gate contacts, local groups. Share what you do honestly and let people come to you. Ask your mentor about local events and other approaches that suit you, and follow UW's rules on promotion.

How do I prepare for first appointments?

Practise explaining UW's services with your mentor, then ask them to help with or join your first few conversations. Scott offers help with your first 10 calls or customer conversations to people who join with him.

Do I have to recruit people to earn?

No. UW's payment plan pays for qualifying customers you help, as well as for building a team. You can focus only on your own customers. Building a team is optional, and earnings from either aren't guaranteed.

What about cold calling or messaging strangers?

Check UW's Partner guidelines and data protection rules before contacting anyone you don't know. This guide doesn't cover what's lawful for unsolicited contact.

Scott's experience: For me, the first hurdle was getting started. My first customers came from friends and family. My advice is to lean on your mentor early: trying to learn everything on your own can mean missing opportunities and learning the hard way.
